401(k) & Simple IRA Plans
Retirement plans for small and mid-size businesses—designed to be useful, not just compliant.
A retirement plan worth participating in.
A good 401(k) does three things: helps the owner save aggressively for retirement, attracts and retains employees, and reduces the company’s tax bill. A mediocre one does none of those things—it just sits there as an HR checkbox.
Plan types we’ll consider
- Simple IRA — easy to set up, low admin cost, best for very small businesses with under ~50 employees.
- Safe Harbor 401(k) — avoids most discrimination testing, lets owners and HCEs max contributions.
- Profit-sharing 401(k) — flexible employer contributions that can be skewed toward owners and key staff.
- Defined benefit / cash balance — for high-income owners wanting to defer six figures a year, often combined with a 401(k).
What I help with
- Plan design that maximizes owner benefit while staying compliant
- Investment menu—reasonable cost, sensible defaults, target-date options
- Fiduciary structure—who’s accountable, and what they’re accountable for
- Participant education that actually moves the needle on participation and contribution rates
